Work Related Road Safety (WRRS) is an important
issue. It has far reaching moral, legal and potential cost issues.
It can seem daunting, complicated and confusing to implement. At
Auto Risk Solutions we believe in keeping WRRS focused, efficient
and most of all simple.
The workplace is not just the office, factory or warehouse. It
includes any place where work is performed, including vehicles.
Workplace/fleet road safety should be integrated into an organizations
health and safety arrangements. As workplaces become increasingly
mobile, organizations need to adopt fleet safety initiatives that
include a safe driving culture.
Risk assessments for work related driving activities should follow
the same principles as for any other work related activity. When
conducting risk assessments a range of hazards need to be considered
concerning the driver, the vehicle and the journey.
| Today, the focus is on the issue of
Fleet safety.
This is a crucial battleground in the campaign against road
casualties since research suggests that around a quarter
to one third of all casualty crashes on Britain's roads
involve someone driving for work.
That translates into roughly 1,000 deaths each year, with
many more seriously injured.
Put in the context of each family that suffers the consequences
of a bereavement or a serious injury to a loved one, these
are horrendous figures.
But the numbers also underline the fact that if we are serious
about reducing the carnage on our roads, then clearly we
need to target people that drive for work.
In practice, that means tackling a huge number of diverse
groups, from the sales rep, to the White Van Man.
It is a huge task. But the good news is that more and more
businesses are coming to recognise that focusing on road
safety is not only good for society, it makes good business
sense as well.
The basic message is that driving for work can, and should,
be managed like any other part of the business.
Not only do fewer accidents make for a more efficient and
economic operation, but companies also have a legal duty
of care for their workers and the driving element of the
job is no exception.”
